Infrared photography with it’s “false colors” has it’s own beauty. A small Photoshop tutorial.
There are several ways to create these images – using special cameras or films, but these are expensive or difficult to handle. Infrared filters work with regular digital cameras, but require long exposure and a tripod. Photoshop allows to create similar effects. I found a tutorial on the web and modified it slightly to my needs and -of course- taste.

Small Tutorial

  • Load an image into Photoshop and apply a Channel Mixer layer. Check the “monochome” box and set these values: red -20, green 200, blue -80.
  • Duplicate the layer and apply a Gaussian blur. Set this layer opacity around 50%.
  • Duplicate the original picture to a new image and apply a Channel Mixer layer. Set these values: red -40, green -200, blue -40. Flatten the image
  • Flatten the black and white image and duplicate it into the colored image.
  • Set the opacity of the black and white layer around 50%.
